Nam Giao Esplanade and Vong Canh Hill

Vong Canh Hill is 7km from Hue with its foot lying next to Perfume River. It is quiet among other famous destinations of Hue but has own features that anyone want to come here to discover.  Vong means watch and observe and Canh means scene so it is best place to enjoy panoramic view and village along Perfume River like Huong Ho, Ngoc Ho, Thuy Bieu with fruit gardens and rice fields. Nam Giao Esplanade is great sacred place for Hue people in private and Vietnamese people in general. Kings under Nguyen Dynasty Feudalism often considered themselves as the son of God so they held annual offering ceremony to worship and to express their respects to their father God. It is located on Duong Xuan Village, Hue City. Coming here, you will be impressed by pine trees which was planted around esplanade that makes you feel close and do not hesitate in a sacred place. Nam Giao Esplanade played an important role in religious and political life of Nguyen Dynasty that created own features of Vietnamese people in that time. On the offering ceremony’s day, big flags with different colors were hung in 4 doors: black flags in North Door, blue flags in East Door, red flags in South Door and while in West Door. All of flags made the ceremony become majestic and monumental. King operated the ceremony by his own. The esplanade is built following oriental theory of 3 agents: Heaven, Earth, Man. Each of agents is represented by one terrace with different color and shape: circular blue heaven, square yellow earth and square red man. The bottom terrace is stands for Man. The Top terrace is the place to hold offering ceremonies to God (Heaven) and Earth. The middle one is used to worship the Sun, Moon, Stars, Mountain, etc. The last terrace is where to offer sacrifice.
